Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection within the soft tissues of your mouth. When left untreated, it can cause serious damage to your teeth and supporting oral structures, including gum recession and bone tissue deterioration. During each of your regular visits, Dr. Sara Sheikh will check your mouth for signs of gum disease so that we can diagnose and begin treatment of this condition as early as possible. Gum disease begins as an inflammation of your gum tissues caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth. This initial stage of mild infection is known as gingivitis. If periodontal disease is diagnosed in this stage it is more easily treated and can often be halted and any damage reversed. If allowed to progress, it develops into a more severe form of the disease known as periodontitis. In this stage, gum disease cannot be fully cured and may cause significant damage to your oral health if not carefully monitored and controlled.

Common signs of gum disease include:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Swollen, tender or unusually red gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in your bite or the fit of oral appliances
  • Pus surrounding teeth and gums
  • Gum recession
  • Pain when chewing

There is a variety of treatments available to help fight the harmful bacteria in your mouth and treat your gum disease. When you meet with our dentist, we will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that meets your unique needs.

We also recommend that you maintain good oral hygiene at home, as this will help prevent gum disease. By brushing and flossing daily and keeping all your regular dental appointments, you can reduce your risk of gum disease and help keep your mouth healthy.
