Oral Cancer Screenings: The Way to Detect Dangerous Oral Issues

Posted .

Dr. Sara Sheikh and Dr. Muhammad Ali Shazib care about you and your smile, which is why we offer oral cancer screenings at Kennebunk Center for Dentistry. Don’t worry, they are included in your six-month checkups so you don’t need to stress about making regular, additional appointments.

We offer oral cancer screenings because when you detect cancer at the early stages of development, you have more treatment options and a higher success rate.

During the oral cancer screening, our dentist will examine your entire oral cavity for signs of oral cancer. The first section of the exam will involve looking for red or white patches in your mouth, like on your tongue, cheeks, and gums as well as in your throat. The second section of the exam will involve your dentist feeling the tissues in your mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities. If a problem is detected, your dentist will explain the next step involving diagnosis and treatment.

Everyone can benefit from an oral cancer screening, especially those who use tobacco, frequently drink alcohol, have a family history of oral cancer, or have a high amount of sun exposure on a regular basis.
