Questions about Porcelain Veneers

Serving Greater Southern Maine and the New Hampshire Seacoast.

How many teeth will need to be veneered?
The number of teeth you may want to treat with porcelain veneers will depend on the condition of the enamel and whether or not you and your dentist feel correction is needed. For some clients, it is the teeth that they are self-conscious about. Teeth that are visible when you smile may benefit from veneers. Teeth that are cracked, chipped, misshapen, or discolored may be good candidates for the porcelain veneer process. Have your Southern Maine cosmetic dentist take a close look at your smile and together you can discuss the most desirable course of action.

Are porcelain veneers painless?
The porcelain veneer process generally involves little if any discomfort. Every case is unique and our goal is to have you be as comfortable as possible while we make your smile beautiful. Typically Novocain is used so you are comfortable.  For clients that are extra sensitive, topical or injectable anesthetic may be used. Your doctor will discuss the procedure with you in detail as well as your comfort level during the process.

How long will it take to get veneers placed?
Your appointment can last from two to four hours, depending on the number of teeth you are having veneered. When a larger number of veneers are needed, the order is typically sent to a lab for fashioning. This means you will require a second visit in two or three weeks.

Should I choose porcelain veneers or dental bonding for my tooth correction?
Dental bonding is a great “catch-all” treatment that allows our dentists the flexibility to reshape each tooth as needed. Bonding can be used on multiple types of tooth surfaces, whereas veneers are used only on the front-facing, easily visible surfaces. Because our veneers are made from porcelain, they are generally thought to be a more aesthetically pleasing option, and they tend to last longer as well.
