Oral Cancer Screening
Serving Greater Southern Maine and the New Hampshire Seacoast.
Oral cancer, number six on the list of commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S., is a potential health hazard that you should research and inform your family about. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, around 35,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. At Kennebunk Center for Dentistry, we offer the latest in cancer screening equipment to ensure our clients get the benefit of early detection technology. We are proud to offer the VELscope® oral cancer screening tool, an amazing technological advancement that gives our dentists an intimate, in-depth look into your mouth.
How VELscope® Works
VELscope® is a hand-held device that your cosmetic dentist uses to interpret tissue condition. This tool can effectively recognize changes in oral tissue, both on the surface and below. Painless and non-invasive, VELscope® technology is far more effective at identifying areas of concern. A safe blue light is used to excite oral tissue, causing it to fluoresce (produce light), making tissue changes easily visible.
Why Early Detection Makes All the Difference
Before VELscope®, oral cancer screenings were primarily visual and physical, with no reliable method of seeing below the surface. And unfortunately, once cancerous lesions become visible, they often indicate an advanced stage of oral cancer. If diagnosis is made early, the survival rates for this type of cancer are very encouraging. At our Kennebunk cosmetic dentistry practice, we believe that early detection and treatment of all oral health issues, including cancer, is our duty as dental health professionals. By investing in this incredible technology, we can save lives.
Signs of Oral Cancer
