Oral Hygiene
Serving Greater Southern Maine and the New Hampshire Seacoast.
Left to right: Lisa Mather, Jennifer Smart, Andrea Berlin, and Linda Babbidge
Good oral hygiene is essential to protecting your mouth from decay and infection. Dentistry is one area where an ounce of prevention is certainly worth tons of cure. Oral hygiene is also a team effort. We will do our part and encourage you to do yours. In addition to your daily cleanings, this means coming in to visit us every six months to get additional tooth cleaning from our skilled hygienists.
If you are due for your six-month cleaning, we invite you to call us at 207-985-7944 or email us today to schedule an appointment at the Kennebunk Center for Dentistry.
The Importance of Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene, or regular tooth cleaning, is crucial to maintaining the health of your mouth, both the gums and the teeth. Good hygiene habits can prevent:
- Bad breath
- Painful, swollen, red, or bleeding gums
- Periodontal disease
- Tooth decay
- Tooth loss
Taking care of your teeth every day can reduce your need for dental treatments such as dental fillings, dental crowns, or dental implants.
Your Role in Oral Hygiene
You have the most important role to play in undertaking good oral hygiene. To do this, you should:
- Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes using an effective tooth brushing technique
- Floss every day, remembering to curl the floss around each tooth and to floss the back of your last tooth in each quadrant
- Visit us every six months for cleaning and check-up
What We Do at Your Check-Up
At your regular check-up we will help you keep your mouth clean and healthy. This includes:
- Removal of plaque and tarter by one of our skilled oral hygienists
- Digital x-rays annually or as necessary to check for decay
- Visual inspection of teeth for decay
Based on the findings during your check-up we may recommend additional treatments or visits. You are less likely to need any serious interventions if you keep up your oral hygiene and make your regular visits.
To learn more about the importance of oral hygiene and how we can help keep your mouth at its healthiest and most attractive, please contact the Kennebunk Center for Dentistry today to schedule an appointment.
