About Endodontic Therapy

Endodontists focus on the diagnosis and treatment of dental pulp disease. Dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth’s root canal that contains the blood vessels and nerves responsible for tooth nourishment. When this tissue becomes infected, it can inflame and cause a variety of symptoms from pain and soreness to large abscesses — and endanger not only the entire tooth, but the jaw as well. Indications of dental pulp infection include sensitivity to temperature, tenderness, pain, tooth discoloration, and swelling. Endodontic therapy solves the problem by completely removing the dental pulp, allowing the tooth to avoid extraction.

If your dentist discovers you are suffering from infected dental pulp, the usual course of action is a root canal procedure. When you return for your root canal appointment, we will first remove the diseased pulp, clean out the root canal, and then fill the space with a biocompatible material, traditionally gutta-percha. In a second appointment, your dentist will place a dental crown atop the tooth to strengthen and protect the enamel. Once the process is complete, you will be able to use your tooth to chew everyday foods without compromising tooth function.
